One approach I like is Narrative therapy. Narrative therapy helps individuals identify their values and skills. It allows individuals to look at their abilities and to calibrate core values so one can live in alignment with what is most important and confront current and future problems. A narrative approach allows individuals to separate who they are from the problem they are experiencing. It is a perceptual shift that externalizes issues rather than internalizing them.
Another approach I use is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). CBT is talk based therapy that focuses on how our thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs affect our feelings, and actions. By challenging maladaptive thought patterns, CBT allows individuals to identify negative thought patterns and challenge them with adaptive ones. Once you notice the negative thoughts, have created new scripts you can challenge yourself when the negative thoughts interfere.
Finally, ACT or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy uses mindfulness and behaviour change strategies to increase psychological flexibility. ACT challenges individuals to radically accept what is happening in their lives and embrace the thoughts rather than fighting or trying to flee from them.
Together we will find the best approach for you!
You may be surprised to hear that virtual therapy can be more effective than face to face therapy. Virtual therapy relieves social pressure and gives the option of video on or off. This can increase relaxation by providing a degree of privacy. Give it a try! Making time for your mental health has never been more convenient.
Meeting virtually for therapy means there is no travel time! This allows you to get the help you need without the cost of travel. Meeting online makes the process less daunting, and allows you to maximize the time you have in the day.
According to research, online counseling is equally effective as in person therapy. Some research even suggests greater satisfaction with online therapy due to the convenience, enhanced privacy due to encrypted video conferencing capabilities, and time savings!
Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes in length.
The rate for a 50-minute session is $175

Many insurance companies cover psychotherapy as part of their extended health care insurance benefits. However, all plans are different.
It is your responsibility to check your coverage with your individual benefit and insurance policy before engaging in therapy.
It is important to note that receipts for psychotherapy can be submitted as medical expenses on your personal income tax with the Canadian Revenue Agency.
There is no set time frame for the therapeutic process. Ultimately you will determine the length of our time together. Some people feel they have met their goals after a few sessions, while others make therapy part of their wellness routine. Regular discussions occur during therapy to monitor therapy goals and progress.
Most people attend weekly sessions when initiating therapy to establish a routine and meet their goals. It is encouraged to have a regular appointment day and time for consistency and continuity.
